Arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport
Suvarnabhumi (pronounced su-wan-na-poom) is Bangkok's main international airport, opened in 2006. It handles most full-service carriers and long-haul flights. The single main terminal is large but straightforward, with arrivals on the second floor.
From landing to exit is 30-50 minutes. Immigration queues are the bottleneck. Visa on arrival adds significant time, sometimes 30-60 minutes on top of regular processing. If you're eligible, get your visa sorted before arrival. Peak periods around midnight see the worst queues, when European and Middle Eastern flights cluster together.
Bangkok has two airports, and this causes confusion. Don Mueang (DMK) is the older airport, now used primarily by budget carriers like AirAsia and Nok Air. If someone is flying a low-cost airline to Bangkok, they might be landing at Don Mueang instead. Always check which airport.
The taxi queue on level 1 is organized and metered. Accept the expressway toll (around 75 baht) or you'll sit in surface traffic for much longer. The Airport Rail Link connects to the city in about 30 minutes, terminating at Phaya Thai station where you can transfer to the BTS Skytrain.
UK to Bangkok is 11-12 hours direct. Flights depart evening UK time and land afternoon or evening the next day. Bangkok is 7 hours ahead of the UK (6 during British Summer Time).
