The airport is privately owned and has a distinctive open-air design with thatched-roof structures—a deliberate choice to put arriving passengers in vacation mode immediately. JetBlue, American, Delta, United, Spirit, Frontier, and Southwest operate direct flights from major US East Coast and Midwest cities, along with numerous charter operators.
The exit process at PUJ is slower than most US travelers expect. Dominican immigration requires an electronic entry form (e-Ticket) that should be completed online before arrival. After immigration, passengers collect bags and pass through customs. The whole process runs 40-70 minutes from touchdown, longer during peak afternoon arrival windows when multiple US flights land within the same hour. The open-air terminal offers limited air conditioning, which can be uncomfortable during waits in the immigration queue.
Most travelers arriving at PUJ are headed to all-inclusive resorts in Bávaro, Punta Cana, or Cap Cana, all within 15-30 minutes of the airport. Resort transfer desks and private car services are outside the arrivals area.
