About

Arriving at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino is Rome's main airport, located 32km southwest of the city centre. Terminal 3 handles most long-haul and intercontinental flights, while Terminal 1 covers European and domestic routes. The terminals are connected landside, so even if you go to the wrong one, you can walk between them.

Rome has a second airport, Ciampino (CIA), which handles Ryanair and some other budget carriers. It's smaller and closer to the city. If someone says they're flying to Rome, check which airport. Budget flights from the UK often land at Ciampino.

From landing to exit at Fiumicino takes 25-40 minutes. EU passport holders use e-gates which are fast. Non-EU immigration is manual and can be slower during peak periods, particularly when afternoon flights from the Americas arrive.

The Leonardo Express is a direct train from Fiumicino to Roma Termini station, taking 32 minutes with departures every 15 minutes. It's the most reliable option. Regional trains also run to Trastevere and other stations for less money but with more stops. Taxis have a fixed fare of 50 euros to anywhere within the Aurelian walls (central Rome).

UK to Rome is 2.5-3 hours. Multiple daily flights from London airports mean short tracking windows. Afternoon flights from the UK land early evening Rome time, which is 1 hour ahead of the UK.
