About

Arriving at Tokyo Haneda Airport

Tokyo Haneda Airport has become the preferred Tokyo airport for most US travelers, overtaking Narita for international flight volume in recent years. Haneda is dramatically closer to central Tokyo—about 30 minutes by train or monorail versus 60-90 minutes for Narita. American, Delta, United, Hawaiian, and JetBlue all operate direct flights from US cities to Haneda, and most have shifted their Tokyo service here from Narita. If you're tracking someone flying to Tokyo from the US, there's a good chance they're landing at Haneda.

All international flights at Haneda use Terminal 3 (formerly called the International Terminal). Japanese immigration is thorough—fingerprinting and photographs are required for all foreign visitors, and the process takes 20-35 minutes depending on queue length. Total time from landing to the arrivals hall runs 35-55 minutes. Many US-to-Tokyo flights arrive late at night (10pm-midnight local time) or very early morning, which actually means shorter immigration lines compared to daytime arrivals.

The Tokyo Monorail connects Terminal 3 to Hamamatsuchō Station in central Tokyo in about 13 minutes, with connections to the JR Yamanote Line (Tokyo's main loop line). The Keikyu Railway reaches Shinagawa Station in about 11 minutes, with connections to the Shinkansen bullet train network. Both options are fast, frequent, and run until approximately midnight. For US families tracking a loved one's arrival, keep in mind that Japan is 14 hours ahead of US Eastern Time (13 during daylight saving time), so a late-night Tokyo landing might be mid-morning back home.

Pickup tip

Terminal 3 handles all international flights. Haneda is only 30 minutes from central Tokyo by monorail or Keikyu train—far closer than Narita. Japanese immigration requires fingerprinting and photos for all foreign visitors. Late-night arrivals are common since many US flights land between 10pm and midnight local time.
