Arriving at Narita International Airport
Narita is Tokyo's main international airport, but it is far from central Tokyo. Expect 60-90 minutes to reach central Tokyo by Narita Express train, or longer by bus depending on traffic. This catches people off guard. Haneda (HND) is the closer airport, about 30 minutes from central Tokyo, and handles a growing number of international flights. Always check which Tokyo airport you're dealing with.
Immigration at Narita is thorough. Japan requires fingerprinting and photos for all foreign visitors. From landing to the arrivals hall takes 30-45 minutes. Lines move steadily but the process is detailed.
Terminal 1 handles JAL and oneworld partners plus some other international carriers. Terminal 2 is ANA and Star Alliance. Terminal 3 is the budget terminal, used by Jetstar, Peach, and Spring Airlines. Terminal 3 is a walk from the main terminals and has no direct train access, so passengers take a shuttle bus.
The Narita Express (N'EX) runs to Tokyo Station in about 60 minutes, then continues to Shinjuku and other central stations. The Skyliner on the Keisei line reaches Ueno in 41 minutes and is slightly cheaper. Both run roughly every 30-40 minutes.
UK to Tokyo is 11-12 hours direct. Flights depart morning UK time and arrive early morning the next day, Japan time. Japan is 9 hours ahead of the UK (8 during British Summer Time).
