About
Cancún International Airport is the busiest airport in Mexico's Caribbean coast and the #1 international destination for US travelers. American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, and Sun Country all operate heavy schedules from dozens of US cities. During spring break and winter holiday seasons, the airport handles enormous volumes of charter and scheduled flights from across the United States and Canada.
The exit process at CUN is significantly longer than what US travelers are used to at domestic airports. After landing, passengers clear Mexican immigration, collect checked bags, pass through customs (including the famous red-light/green-light inspection system), and then exit to the arrivals hall. During peak periods this can take 60-90 minutes from touchdown. Even during quieter times, 45 minutes is typical. If you're tracking a family member's arrival, don't expect to hear from them immediately after the "landed" notification.
Terminal 3 handles most US carriers and is the newest and largest terminal. Terminal 4 is used by some international airlines and charters. Terminal 2 handles domestic Mexican flights and some international carriers. The terminals are spread along a long road, so knowing which terminal matters for hotel transfers. The Hotel Zone in Cancún is about 20-30 minutes from the airport, while Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya are 45-75 minutes south.
Pickup tip
Most US flights arrive at Terminal 3 or 4. Mexican immigration and customs can take 45-90 minutes—much longer during spring break and holiday weekends. Hotel shuttles and transfer desks are outside each terminal.
