About

Arriving at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport

Madrid-Barajas is Spain's largest airport and Iberia's hub. The airport has two distinct areas: the older T1-T3 cluster and the modern T4/T4S complex designed by Richard Rogers. These areas are far apart. You cannot walk between T1-T3 and T4. A free shuttle bus connects them, taking about 15 minutes.

T4 and T4S (satellite) are connected by an automated train. Iberia and its oneworld partners operate from T4/T4S. Most intercontinental flights arrive at T4S, and passengers take the train to T4 for immigration and baggage. T1-T3 handle other airlines including some low-cost carriers.

From landing to exit takes 25-40 minutes. EU passport holders use e-gates at T4 which are efficient. Non-EU immigration is manual but generally moves well. T4's arrivals hall is spacious and well-organized.

Metro line 8 connects T1-T2 and T4 to the city centre. The journey to Nuevos Ministerios (the main interchange station) takes about 15 minutes from T4. There's an airport surcharge on the metro fare. Cercanias commuter trains also serve T4 with connections to Atocha and Chamartin stations.

UK to Madrid is 2-2.5 hours. Flights run frequently from London, with Iberia and British Airways both offering multiple daily services. Madrid is 1 hour ahead of the UK (same offset as most of continental Europe).

Pickup tip

T4 and T4S are modern but far from T1-T3. Metro line 8 connects all terminals to the city.
